Bioactive ingredients for modulating menopause symptoms at very early stages of female reproductive ageing
PHD Description
The Nutrition and Health Unit at Eurecat Technology Center is looking for a highly motivated researcher to work on the field of functional foods, bioactive ingredients, and their effect on health.
The candidate will work mainly for the SHE-HEALTH Flagship project. The thesis will research into new bioactive ingredients in the context of functional nutrition for peri and postmenopausal women. The general goals of the thesis are to gain knowledge about the subtle changes that occurs at the very early stages of female reproductive aging and to discover new nutrition strategies to modulate these changes before the appearance of the postmenopaulsal stage. To achieve these aims, the candidate will characterize different preclinical models of reproductive aging in the different phases to determine the beneficial effects of bioactive ingredients on health alterations that occur in the stages of transition to postmenopause. Furthermore, he/she will try to identify new early biomarkers of menopause and their interaction with the bioactive compounds using omic sciences and a systems biology approach.

The Nutrition and Health Unit (UTNS) is specialized in the design and the assessment of the biological efficacy of food, extracts, nutraceuticals and/or functional ingredients. Related with the Vicente Lopez, UTNS R&D is focused on molecular and personalized nutrition. Our group has developed methodologies that enable us to describe the molecular basis that explains the interaction between bioactive ingredients and the biomolecules upon which they act. We also investigate the gene-diet interactions conditioned by different genetic polymorphisms to find out more about the effect of food components on different phenotypes.
Currently, UTNS is strongly focused on personalized nutrition, leading the European project PREVENTOMICS (Empower consumers to PREVENT diet-related diseases through OMICS sciences). This project aims at developing personalized plans for nutrition and lifestyle habits to improve the health of people, using omics sciences, which provide an invaluable opportunity for studying such processes and identify early alterations in metabolism that can be corrected by means of nutrition. PREVENTOMICS is intended to integrate this approach with current personalized nutrition tools, Information and Communications Technology (ICT) tools and protocols for behavioral change.
