Eurecat is the second Research & Technology Organisation in Spain and one of the largest applied research and technology transfer organisation in Southern

Europe. It brings together the experience of more than 800 professionals who generate an annual turnover of 69 million euros and provides services to more than 2,000 companies. Eurecat integrates advanced digital capabilities and experience in biotechnology, industry and sustainability and collaborates with industry in R+D+I activities and projects, offering advanced scientific and technological services and specialized knowledge to respond effectively to the technological needs of very different business sectors, accelerating innovation, reducing both risks and spendings on scientific and technological infrastructures. The technology center participates in more than 200 large national and international consortium projects of high strategic R&I, has 230 patents and 10 spin-offs. Eurecat has eleven centers in Catalonia and presence in Madrid, Malaga and Chile.

Job description

“Modelling of water distribution networks to predict the behavior of disinfection by-products”

PHD Description

The Water, Soil and Air (WAS) Unit of Eurecat Technology Center is looking for a highly motivated researcher to work on the development of models to predict the quality of water in drinking water distribution networks, specially focusing on the prediction of the behavior of disinfection by-products (DBPs).

The candidate will work mainly for the SQUARE Flagship project, which has the objective to develop methods, models and tools for the prediction of DBPs in drinking water distribution networks from a multidisciplinary approach.

The focus of the PhD will be on the development of models to predict the behavior of specific DPBs (such as trihalomethanes) in water distribution networks based on empirical models calibrated with lab experiments and field data from a real system.

The research will focus on the scientific contribution and technological developments including:

  • Implementation of hydraulic modelling and chlorine prediction of full-scale networks
  • Determination of the main parameters affecting DBPs behavior with experiments at lab scale
  • Developing DBPs formation models by means of laboratory experimentation (for regulated and unregulated DBPs)
  • Create models to predict DBPs in real networks.
  • Model calibration and validation in full-scale drinking water networks
  • Validation of on-line sensors for prediction of DBPs

Requirements

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • MSc or BSc in Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, or related disciplines
  • Modelling/simulation knowledge
  • Water chemistry knowledge
  • Programming skills and motivation
  • Team spirit and ability to work independently.
  • Problem solving capacities
  • Excellent communication skills, flexibility and creativity.
  • Very good knowledge of English is required.
  • Eager to learn

Location: Barcelona or Manresa

What Eurecat can offer you

WAS Unit has a broad expertise on the water sector (drinking water, wastewater, reclaimed water, groundwater) mainly in treatment and management. Eurecat has very-well equipped laboratories for the performance of lab, bench and pilot experiments and for the monitoring of chemical and biological parameters.

Candidate will be integrated with a very skilled and dynamic team of more than 30 researchers, most of them doctors within the Water, Air and Soil Unit and will have the possibility to work in close collaboration with researchers from other units in Eurecat (digital, biotech, etc.).
